Over the past week we put together a variety of science and art activities you can do at home with some common supplies. Watch the videos below to see what each activity is, and download our instruction guides with additional resources online here.

Shake up the Sounds

Sounds are all around us. We can make a loud sound or a quiet sound-but how are sounds created? Sound waves travel through the air as vibrations to our ears. Let’s make some sound waves of our own!

Have you ever seen water striders or other types of bugs that seem to glide across the surface of water without ever sinking? This is an example of surface tension! Follow us on our exploration of how this happens and use some common objects (like coins!) to try it yourself at home.

STEAM Connections: Pulleys

A variation on the wheel and axle system, a pulley is a type of simple machine that has helped humans build large structures for thousands of years. Pulleys you see everyday include the ropes used to raise and lower flags on flagpoles and the cords used on blinds in many windows. Follow along to learn more about pulleys, and make your own!
