Virtual Field Trip: Machu Picchu
Ready to travel? To virtually explore the world? Join us on a virtual field trip to Machu Picchu!
Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan citadel. Now a World Heritage site, people from around the world can visit and walk through the ruins.
See our video tutorial on using Google to explore Machu Picchu. Below is the process step-by-step, additional activities and library resources.
1. Google “Machu Picchu”. Click on the Map view.
2. Zoom in close to the site and pick up the street view tool and select a location to drop.
3. Explore by clicking on the arrows and x’s to virtually explore. Use the back arrow at top left to go back to the map and drop street view tool again in another part of Machu Picchu.
Use the search box on the Library’s homepage to research articles and books about the Incas. Write down five interesting facts as you learn, and share those facts with friends and family.
Plan your city! Machu Picchu is an ancient city with homes, baths and religious sites. Grab a blank sheet of paper and map out your city, whether it is a dream city or a real city. Make sure to include all the places you visit and would like to visit including: school, grocery store, park and homes.
Your library has a plethora of books and databases for you to use to learn more about Machu Picchu, the Inca, and other ancient wonders of the world. You will need a Plano Public Library card to use these resources:
Lost City: The Discovery of Machu Picchu by Ted Lewin
Machu Picchu by Gillian Richardson
Maya, Incas, and Aztecs by Brian Williams
Ancient Inca: Archaeology Unlocks the Secrets of the Inca’s Past by Beth Gruber
Exploring Ancient Cities by Jessie Alkire
Great Discoveries and Amazing Adventures by Claire Llewellyn
Place items on hold for porchside pickup at the Plano Public Library.
