DIY Literacy with Library Make: Shoe Box Flannel
Everyone can be a storyteller with this do-it-yourself portable flannel board! It’s time for Library Make.
Felt board storytelling is a fun, effective way to help your child develop language skills such as listening and talking, and increase their vocabulary. You can use a felt board and felt pieces as tools to encourage children to participate in storytelling. Your child can share familiar stories, such as fairy tales, or stories they create themselves! As an enriching alternative, try incorporating counting or rhyming during this early literacy play.
Download and print our handout for instructions, the supply list and shape templates. Be sure to watch the video above for a step-by-step look at how we made this flannel board using a shoe box, hot glue, felt and other materials.
Library Make is a video guide series for creating the fun literacy activities used at the library at home. Our wonderfully creative and expert staff at Plano Public Library bring you a new idea each month, tying to Early Child Ready to Read strategies. You can see our full Library Make playlist on our YouTube channel here. Be sure to subscribe to get notifications when we upload a new video!
