Tech Tips for Kids: Use Technology as a Tool

Technology is all around us and is a part of our daily lives. Your child will encounter technology at an early age so building a healthy relationship with technology needs to start now. Our Tech Tips for Kids series will help you set your child up for success.

Today’s Tech Tip for Kids is: Use Technology as a Tool

At an early age your child, and most likely you as well, see technology as a distraction, something to keep busy with.  Whether it’s a game, a video or some other, less productive app or program, technology is largely underutilized in regards to your child.

Technology can be used much more effectively when you show your child how to use technology as a tool. With everything else our phone and tablets can do, we sometimes forget what their most basic functions are meant to be – namely to be a tool to help us in our everyday tasks. There are dozens of ways to teach AND entertain your child with technology with even such mundane functions as the calculator.

  • Listen to music on your phone
  • Download and listen to an audiobook, or read along with a picture book
  • Play a dictionary game! Pick a word or object around your home or on the road, if you are in your car, have your child tell you what they think it is then look it up in your phone or tablet’s dictionary.

These actions will help reinforce the idea with your child that your phone or tablet, or any technology that might be available for them, is a tool and not and toy. This will help open up their minds to what  their technology is capable of.  It can still be a distraction if that is needed, and sometimes that is a great use for it, but that distraction can be so much more productive and educational.

So explore your own technology and the find things there that will not only help keep your child entertained but open their minds to all the ways technology can be used as a tool to make their learning easier.
