Baby Sign Language: Hello & Goodbye

Learn how to use signs for Hello and Goodbye with your family.

Research suggests that signing gives a child a way to communicate months before they can talk and that children can understand sign language long before they begin to use it.

You can learn more about this form of communication on our Communicating with Your Baby/Toddler page on the blog.

Signing Hello and Goodbye

Hello and goodbye can be used for more than just jamming out to “Hello, Goodbye” by Caspar Babypants!

Sign hello whenever you see your baby, even if you left the room for only a few minutes. Similarly, sign goodbye to your baby whenever you leave their presence. You can also sign hello and goodbye with your baby when greeting or saying farewell to other family members and friends.

Below, your librarians show you how to sign both hello and goodbye.
