The Elephant and Piggie series is great to read aloud or practice reading together. The books feature two good friends and their adventures together. Gerald and Piggie love each other, but like all friends, sometimes they disagree. Explore relatable topics like feelings, sharing and imagination, with the trademark cartoon illustrations and humor of other Mo Willems titles. While the books are a little longer than some early readers, the stories are made up of short dialogue to keep things moving – plus, the speech bubbles are color-coded to each character, to make it easy to tell who’s talking. Lots of high frequency words and repetition make them perfect for reading practice.
Want to read your favorite Elephant and Piggie book again? Check our catalog to see what titles are available at your library, place items on hold and even discover new favorites. Some of our Elephant and Piggie books are in Chinese or Spanish, as well as English.
These and other early reader titles are perfect for children who are starting to read on their own. Most will feature simple, repetitive words that are easy for children to read, recognize and sound out. Plano Public Library also uses a color-coding system to help you find the books that are just right for your new reader. Practice is the most important way to build reading skills, so look for books and series your child finds interesting.
